Queensland is a hub for scientific education, research, development, commercialisation and innovation.
All of Queensland’s universities conduct research in a range of subjects, providing significant opportunities for research. They also participate in national and international projects, collaborating with governments, industry and other research institutions.
Queensland’s university research centres include:
Australian Tropical Science and Innovation Precinct (James Cook University) – a world tropical research hub currently being constructed at James Cook University’s Townsville campus. The precinct will focus on finding scientific solutions for sustainable natural resources used in the tropics.
Centre of Excellence in Engineered Fibre Composites (University of Southern Queensland) – has an international reputation for pioneering research and development in the application of fibre composites in civil infrastructure.
Centre for Applied Research in Learning, Engagement, Andragogy and Pedagogy (Bond University) – supports the creation, application and dissemination of research in the higher education domain.
Centre for Indigenous Education and Research (Australian Catholic University) – provides strategic direction and leadership in the area of Indigenous education and research.
Centre for Plant and Water Science (CQUniversity) – conducts collaborative research, with government and industry groups, in the water and plant sciences.
Institute for Health and Biomedical Innovation (Queensland University of Technology) – is tackling problems caused by an ageing population, as well as pursuing solutions to global health and wellness challenges.
National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility (Griffith University) – acts to compile information from national and international research on climate change and develop National Adaptation Research Plans that identify critical gaps in scientific information.
The Facility is distinct from similar institutions in that it focuses entirely on generating the knowledge required for Australia to adapt to the physical impact of climate change.
Queensland Brain Institute (The University of Queensland) – where researchers are exploring ways to stimulate the production of new functional nerve cells to overcome diseases such as dementia, stroke and motor neuron disease and to promote optimal brain function.
Sustainability Research Centre (University of the Sunshine Coast) – with a focus on sustainable communities, sustainable environments and the institutions that relate to them, this transdisciplinary centre is committed to research that supports the transformation of society towards sustainability.
The Queensland Government works closely with industry and university research centres to ensure Queensland gets the maximum benefit from its national and international relationships. Fellowship opportunities are available for researchers in government, industry, academia and the cultural sector.
