Safe at work
While you are studying in Queensland, you may be able to obtain permission to work from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. You can find out how to apply for permission to work, and obtain an Australian Tax File Number on their website www.diac.gov.au/students/students/ (external site).
Australia has strict laws relating to work. These laws apply to all people working in Australia, whether they are locals, residents, or international students. They define and protect your rights and responsibilities at work including the minimum amount you must get paid, your taxation and superannuation obligations, your safety at work, what work you can do, and the way people at work treat you.
The Queensland Government has information for young workers about pay, tax, your rights at work, and what to do if there is a problem at your work. Check out the young workers section of their website www.deir.qld.gov.au/industrial/youngworkers (external site).
In some rare situations, you may experience bullying, harassment or discrimination at work. For more information about what this means and where to seek help click here.
