Driving
Australians drive on the left side of the road. All drivers must follow road rules, drive a registered and insured car, and carry their driver licence with them. For information about using a non-Queensland driver licence to drive in Queensland visit www.transport.qld.gov.au/Home/Assistance_and_services/

Some Australian road rules may be different from those in your home country. For example, police actively enforce laws which prohibit driving if you have been drinking alcohol, or if you are talking on a hand-held mobile phone. Driving above the speed limit is also illegal as are both hitchhiking, or picking up hitchhikers in your car.
For information about road rules, road safety and maps of Queensland roads, check out this website provided by the Queensland Government: www.qld.gov.au/services_for_queenslanders/driving_and_public_

If you are leaving the city, Australia’s climate, environment and long distances provide driving conditions very different from what you might be used to. For your safety make sure you plan your trips well, take any supplies you may need with you, rest frequently and leave yourself lots of time to get to your destination.
