Work

The strong service industry and economy in Queensland offers opportunities for international students to work as well as study.

Many students are allowed to work, although some visas have limited work rights. It’s important that you are clear about the limitations of your visa before seeking work.

For more information about visa requirements and how to apply for permission to work in Australia, visit the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship website.

Finding work

Our Student Directory contains links to many employment websites that may help you find work in Queensland.

Your study institution may also offer employment assistance services such as workshops in resume writing or job interview techniques and tips.

Work experience and internships

During your time in Queensland, you may wish to undertake unpaid work experience or an internship. Work experience and internships are often complementary to studying as they allow students to put their knowledge from their studies to use in the real world.

Many Queensland study institutions offer work experience placement services to help you find work experience opportunities.

Volunteering

Volunteer work is a great way to learn valuable real-world skills and give back to the greater community. There is a wide range of volunteering opportunities available in Queensland.

For more information about volunteering in Queensland visit the Queensland Government’s Get Involved website.

Training for work

To obtain work in some industries in Queensland, you might need to do some specific work-related training (internal link to training page with working holiday maker section). For example if you wish to work in tourism and hospitality, a food safety course or customer service training course may give you a competitive edge when job hunting. Use the course finder on the right-hand side of the page, to search for relevant courses.

Employment conditions

Australia has strict laws relating to employment conditions. These apply to anyone working in Australia, including international students. They cover a wide range of topics including:

  • the minimum amount you must get paid
  • your taxation and superannuation obligations
  • safety at your place of employment
  • what work you can do
  • unfair treatment in the work place.

The Queensland Government has put together some information especially for young workers about pay, tax, your employment rights and what to do if there is a problem. For more information visit the Get out there website.
